Still Losing Weight and Feeling Great

My progress has been good, though very erratic/strange (to me, anyway). I’ll go 2 to 3 weeks with no weight loss and then bam, a pound a day for 3 or 4 days. It’s just odd.

Regardless, I currently weigh in at 212lbs. As of November 1, 2010, I weighed 258.

I’m still following the principles in Taubes’ Why We Get Fat book, with one key exception – in early May I joined a gym (www.fairmountac.com) and have been working out daily ever since. Not because I force myself too, but because I actually enjoy it. When I tried low-fat diets in the past I always hated working out. Watching the really fat people do senseless fitness routines these days at the gym reminds me of those days. I feel sorry for them. I want to scream out to them, “Get off the damn treadmill, dude, and do the following:

a. Stop exercising, because it will just make you hungrier and your body will push you to eat more to compensate – you burn relatively few calories walking or doing 25 minutes on an elliptical machine anyway – that 250 calories you might burn is just replaced by a few hundred calories more your body will want to eat to compensate…

b. Read Why We Get Fat… or Atkins…or The Zone…or any decent book that breaks through the myths of why many of us are predisposed to being fat, and research how humans store fat. It’s really straight-forward and no longer a theory but a fact. Yet, amazingly, medical ‘professionals’ don’t understand/know, and continue to push low-fat diets. Amazing how the low-fat diet fad started in the 70’s, and that coincided with the obesity epidemic…

So that’s where I stand now. My current goal is to get down to 199.9 pounds. I estimate it will take a couple of months, as with the working out I’m now eating more and gaining muscle (I’ll post my fitness routines separately), and trying to figure out the best way to go about that still. I’m also going to the Riviera Maya, Mexico, for a week this month – that surely won’t help my weight loss : ( I do plan on continuing my weightlifting routine but will curb the cardio in lieu of lots of swimming/physical activity with my family during the day while there. I am concerned with being able to avoid carbs, as they are easily hidden in foods that you don’t suspect…particularly at an ‘all-inclusive’ resort where I can eat all the food and drink all the alcohol I want. Ugh : (

Regardless, the point of this post is to update my progress. I’ll post again regarding my fitness approach, as well as the Mexico trip.
